what do you think of this set up for my husky 455 rancher? the husky its stock now, i was hopeing to get some more out of the saw. its not my main cutting saw but if my 1950's 24in mcCulloch 80cc ever goes down i most likely wont find parts for the old girl, so i wanted to up grade the husky 455 by, for one, (idk what the direct drive size a stock 455 on the saw is) is getting a 3/8 chain for it not the stock.32something i was thinking of going with a stihl Oilomatic Rapid Micro (RMS) carving chain 20in or the Oilomatic rapid duro (RD) chain 20in depending on price difference. (if you know please share) what i plan to cut is cherry/oak/hemlock/pigwood/ash/apple so i thought a semi-chisel would be the best and stay shaper longer. i also would like to add a rim drive sprocket system, never broke a sprocket but i hear rim are easyer and cheaper on the long run. one thing i would like to know is the direct drive size, if it matters fo instance if i get a rim drive to keep the same as stock or can i change the size, for that matter whats the best size for this set up. other than all of that i have been debaiting to get a longer bar for the saw maybe like a 25in or around there but if i do that i will have to change to a lower tooth sprocket for less speed and more torc for the 55cc motor. my dad had a model 50 husky which is the same thing as the 455 rancher, but when he bought his he had them put a 3/8 chain and they changed the sprocket, i guessing for a slower speed. if you know the prices on a rim drive for the 455 or the chains, let me know if i go with a longer bar i will prob go oregon from lowes, i think those run $45 or around there. let me know what you think thanks
As to the Stihl chain, the RMC chain is what you are looking for. The RD chain is carbide tipped and will be very expensive, and hard to get resharpened. The RSC chain is a full chisel and works better in hard and frozen wood. The RMC will hold its edge better in dirty wood. Rim sprocket it the way to go. Its easier to change out and less expensive. Don't go just by what your dad has, saws have changed so much even in just 5 years. Go by what Husqvarna recommends, and what will safely fit on your saw.
