Can I replace NiCad with Lithium Ion In Ryobi 18v?
I have a set of 18v Ryobi Tools and the NiCad Batteries are junk after just a half a year. (Three different sets) Can I replace the battery packs with the Lithium Ion batteries? I have researched this with mixed results. I do know I need to buy a Lithium Ion specific charger. Has anyone personally done this successfully?
Absolutely.YES! I have had the Ryobi 18v system for several years and have gone through several sets of the Ni-Cad batteries. I know have two of the Li-Ion batteries and they are fabulous. Yes, you can only charge them with the Li-Ion charger, but, that charger can also charge the old Ni-Cads. I still run some of the old Ni-Cads, and they are still decent, but I really like the Li-Ion in a high draw tool, like the circular saw or reciprocating saw, they go a lot further. One point to consider, the Li-Ion batteries don't like the cold, where the Ni-Cads don't seem to care. If you are using them in cold weather, you will need to keep them warm, a lot of the trades keep the Li-Ion batteries in their trucks. Also, the Li-Ion chargers are based on voltage rather than temperature. The old Ni-Cads didn't recharge well when they were hot, but the Li-Ions don't care, and, they have no memory. Watch for sales on matching tools, recently Home Depot had a Ryobi Drill, 2 Li-Ion batteries and a matching charger for $70. Basically getting the charger and drill for free. Also, the Li-Ions come in two sizes, a compact and a heavy duty. The compact is great for the drill-driver since is lighter weight, but the heavy duty is preferred on saws. Good Luck.
